Prithee, unpop thy collar

I must object.

Twice or thrice within the past couple of weeks I have seen popped collars...on middle-aged women. The worst was recently when I saw a woman with several small children, all dressed in brightly colored polos, all with collars popped!!!

What gives? Has anyone else noticed this?

On obnoxious frat boys, you can just ignore it. Frequently, it is the least of their problems, from a fashion perspective.

But with these ladies--is it ironic? Doubtful. Is it non-ironic? Despicable. Is it non-ironically ironic? Color me mystified.

First, a little background. Popped collars most recently hit the fashion scene when I was in high school and you but a wee babe.

Fast foward to to about 2006: while still entrenched as a fashion staple for richy preppy frat boys, this popping of the collar has become a hit with older women. Why you ask?

Blame the wildly successfuly book called "The Grown Up Girls Guide to Fashion". You see, as a girl gets older and her neck looks, well, mor e turkey-like, the popped collar comes to the rescue. Being 42 myslef, and not having to worry just yet about the sagging neck line, I will refuse to pop it. Long thick hair will be my refuge.

Hope this solves this shocking fashion mystery. I agree, ick. Now, why do they force it on their kids?

I had no idea! It is good to know there is a method to the madness.
