Oh dear

New 'Survivor' Divides Groups by Race (AP via WP)

Host Jeff Prost says Survivor is "a social experiment. And this is adding another layer to that experiment."

Uh huh.

We sure have come a long way! Who would have thought that we would have a televised battle of the races competition in 2006?!?! May the strongest race win?

Next year, it will be Survivor with religions---protestants, catholics, jews, buddhists, sunni, and shiite muslims. Another CBS "social" experiment.

No kidding. And if the whole concept of this show weren't enough...you should see some of the comments people are leaving about it at various sites to the effect of, "way to go CBS for not being politically correct" or "like people aren't segregated in real life..." Examples here.

These people keep missing the point...the problem w/ this concept is not just the segregation of races. It's the competition of races. If one team beats out another, are we to conclude that people of that particular race is generally smarter, stronger, faster, fitter, or less finicky about eating bugs than any other? Ick. This is America, not Gattaca, you freaks.

Mark Burnett may well be a eugenicist, but I'm not qualified to parse his sociological aims. Anyway, that's all secondary to the big picture: ratings. As far as I'm concerned, the ploy's worked. My chances of actually watching next season have increased from "Zero" to "Probably not."
